Svend Press

Muscles workedChest
EquipmentOtherIsolation

The Svend press is a standing chest squeeze: you press two plates together palm to palm at chest height and push them straight out in front of you, holding the inward pressure the whole time. There is almost no load on the shoulder joint and the weight is trivial — what it does is force a hard chest contraction, which makes it a finisher or a warm-up rather than a real strength exercise.

How to do it

  1. Press two plates together hard at chest height, then push them straight out.
  2. The tension comes from squeezing inward, not from the weight itself.

Common mistakes

  • Loading it like a press. Light plates and constant squeeze is the whole exercise.

What it trains

Chest
squeezes the plates together and holds that pressure as the arms extend — the isometric squeeze is the exercise
Front delts
hold the arms out in front of the body while the chest does the squeezing
Core
stops you leaning back as the weight moves away from your body

Common questions

What weight should I use for a Svend press?

Two small plates, usually 2.5 to 5 kg each, and often less than that. The limit is how hard you can squeeze them together, not how much you can hold — if you need a heavy plate to feel it, the grip is doing the work instead of the chest.

Is the Svend press actually worth doing?

As a chest finisher or a warm-up before pressing, yes. As a way to build size or strength on its own, no — the load is far too light to drive progression, and nothing about it replaces a press or a fly. Treat it as a way to feel the chest working, not as a main lift.

Can I do it with dumbbells instead of plates?

Yes, held vertically end to end and squeezed together the same way, which some people find easier to grip. Plates give you flatter surfaces and a cleaner squeeze; dumbbells are simply what most gyms have more of.
