The plate- or pin-loaded row machine fixes the path of the handles, so there is no bar to balance and nothing to hold steady but the handles themselves. That makes it the easiest row to take to genuine failure safely and the easiest to add small increments to, which are the two things that matter most late in a back session when your form is what is failing rather than your lats.

How to do it

  1. Set the chest pad so your arms extend fully without your shoulders rolling forward.
  2. Pull with the elbows and let the handles come back slowly.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back to move more weight, which is the one thing the chest pad is there to prevent.

What it trains

Upper back
retracts the shoulder blades along a path the machine has already chosen
Lats
pull the elbows back, more so on the neutral or low handles
Biceps
bend the elbows through the second half of the pull
Rear delts
take more of the work on the wide, high-handle setting

Common questions

Is a machine row worth doing if I already do barbell rows?

Yes, as the second row rather than the first. The barbell version builds the position and the loading; the machine lets you push the last sets close to failure without a hinge to hold, and that extra hard volume is where a lot of back growth comes from.

How should I set the seat height?

So the handles line up with the bottom of your ribs when your arms are straight. Too high and you pull toward the chest and turn it into a rear-delt movement; too low and your shoulders roll forward at the stretch.

Should I let my shoulders stretch forward at the bottom?

Let the shoulder blades travel forward, yes — keep the lower back still. That protraction is a real part of the range on a supported row and it is the main advantage the machine has over a barbell, where a forward stretch under load is a much worse idea.
