T-Bar Row

Muscles workedUpper backLatsBiceps
EquipmentBarbellPull

The T-bar row loads one end of a bar on a pivot and rows it with a close neutral grip, which puts the weight underneath you rather than in front — so you can row heavy with less of the forward pull that makes a barbell row hard to hold. The neutral grip and the fixed arc also let most people feel the mid-back more directly here than on any other free-weight row.

How to do it

  1. Chest up, hinge at the hip, and let the bar hang before the first rep.
  2. Pull to the sternum with the elbows close to the body.

Common mistakes

  • Using so much weight that the movement becomes a series of jerks from the hips.

What it trains

Upper back
retracts the shoulder blades against a load sitting close to your centre of gravity
Lats
drive the elbows back and down, with the close neutral grip favouring them
Lower back
holds the hinge — less punishing than a barbell row, but still working
Biceps
bend the elbows from a strong neutral position

Common questions

T-bar row or barbell row?

T-bar if you want to row heavy without the lower back deciding when the set ends, barbell if you want the hardest version and the carryover to deadlifts. The T-bar sits the load closer to you, so the same weight is noticeably easier to hold in position.

How do I do a T-bar row without a T-bar machine?

Wedge one end of a barbell in a corner or a landmine sleeve, load the other, and row it with a close-grip V-handle looped under the bar. It is the same movement, and the only thing you lose is the chest pad if the machine has one.

Is a chest pad on a T-bar row better?

Better for isolating the back, worse for loading the hinge. The pad removes your lower back from the set entirely, which is either the point or a loss depending on why you chose this row. If you already deadlift heavy, the pad is usually the smarter pick.
